The Beautiful Ones: Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast

On Episode 52 of the Press Rewind – Prince Lyrics Podcast, I welcome Leslie Ballard back to the show to discuss the emotionally fraught “The Beautiful Ones” off Prince’s Purple Rain album. We both agree that this particular song is a highlight not only for the album and the film, but as one of Prince’s most memorable tracks over his entire career. Is it the lyrics, the music, the performance or that amazing scream at the end? Probably all of the above, but please check out the episode anyway!

The goal of each episode of Press Rewind is to:

  • Take a track by track look at the lyrical content of Prince’s discography
  • Discuss my own interpretation of each song’s lyrics along with any guest I may have
  • If submitted, discuss listener’s interpretations of each song’s lyrics

Thank you for joining me on this journey through Prince’s catalog!

  1. Another great podcast with great comparisons. I love the phantom of the opera and Shakespearean tragedy comparisons. Those are somethings I would have never though about. Also, the synthesizers do have a brooding Gothic feel to them. In that sense you could have compared it to an Edgar Allan Poe story minus the murder. Also, think Apollonia stayed for the Beautiful Ones performance in the movie. I think she stormed out of the club after Darling Nikki.

    1. Yeah, you’re totally right. Apollonia loved the The Kid’s performance of The Beautiful Ones and it moved her to tears, but didn’t cause her to run out of the club. Appreciate you taking the time to write me here and hopefully you continue to listen!
